Dan + Shay perform “You” at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards – Billboard
Whether it’s sunny Sunday morning, pouring rain, or the 2022 Billboard Music Awards, Dan + Shay’s got you. Just minutes after stepping up to accept the award for Best Country Duo/Group, Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney once again took to the stage at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas to deliver a heartwarming performance from their beloved Good things track “You” on Sunday (May 15).
Looking dapper in bright red suits, the pair matched the rest of their group perfectly and the colorful stop sign lights that burned across the stage. “I’ve had you for the rest of my days,” they sang, standing side by side. “Sunday morning sun or pouring rain, I’ve had you for the rest of my life.”
Backed by a small back-up vocal group, Dan and Shay’s signature harmonies were on full display – until the very end, when Mooney stepped forward to deliver a loud, glorious solo note as fans cheered the audience.
Drawing inspiration from 1990s country classics, “You” is steeped in the sweetness and simplicity pioneered by artists like Alan Jackson and Brooks & Dunn. “I went into a nerd phase listening to them because they were so open and everything was sitting in the right place,” Smyers said. Billboard Last year. “There’s just a bit of magic in this minimalism.”
The song was first released in 2021 as part of the duo’s fourth studio album, Good things, which also delivered singles “I Should Probably Go to Bed” and the Justin Bieber-assisted “10,000” Hours. The record peaked at No. 6 during its 15 weeks on the Billboard 200 and landed at No. 2 on the Country Albums chart, helping Dan + Shay win Best Country Duo on Sunday night.
“Fans, you guys…,” Smyers said in his acceptance speech, “we all love you.”
