Billboard Music Awards 2022: Glass Animals joke they’re ‘least rock and roll people in the world’ after win
Glass Animals received the top rock artist award at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards, but frontman Dave Bayley said he never expected to win in that category.
The awards ceremony at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas kicked off Sunday night (May 15) with rapper P Diddy hosting the event.
The Weeknd had won the most nominations this year, with nods in 17 categories, while Doja Cat’s 14 nominations put her in second place. Justin Bieber, Kanye West and Olivia Rodrigo received 13 nominations each, while Drake was nominated in 11 categories.
Along with being nominated for Best Rock Artist, the “Heat Waves” hitmakers were also competing with K-pop group BTS for Best Duo/Group on Sunday.
While BTS ultimately won the latter category, Glass Animals took home the award for Best Rock Artist – with singer Bayley joking that they are “the least rock and roll in the world”.
“Whoa, that’s cool,” Bayley began in her acceptance speech, accompanied onstage by fellow band members Joe Seaward, Drew MacFarlane and Edmund Irwin-Singer.
“Joe [Seaward] and I was literally whispering, saying we’re the least rock and roll in the world and we’ll never win this award,” Bayley continued, adding, “We’re officially rock and roll and I can’t wait to tell my mom .”
The night’s big winners include Drake, who picked up five awards, including Best Rap Artist and Best Rap Album for Certified lover, which came out last year.
Meanwhile, BTS became the most awarded group in BBMA history on Sunday after the K-pop sensations won three of the six categories in which they were nominated, bringing their total to 12. Ahead of BTS, Destiny’s Child held the record for most BBMA wins, with 11 awards, for 17 years.
